TWC Roadmaster 1.4.0: the dry van family

Two new trailers beside the 53-foot van: a 28-foot single-axle pup and a 40-foot tandem. One rule set every number: storage and everything else scales with the length of the trailer. How three lengths came out of one body, what the first proofs got wrong, and what the drive proved.

One rule

The 53-foot van was the only trailer. Taroos wanted more of them, with one condition: storage and everything else scales with the length of the trailer. Dry vans share their width and height, so what they carry goes with their length, and so does every other number: storage, weight, durability, price, craft time and the recipe. The lineup is three lengths. The 20-foot was dropped, and a flatbed and a car hauler stay on the ideas list.

Van Axles Storage Empty mass Durability Price Craft time
28’ single, dual wheels 60 slots (12 x 5) 3,229 kg 7,400 19,000 190 s
40’ tandem 96 slots (12 x 8) 5,155 kg 10,600 27,000 272 s
53’ tandem 120 slots (12 x 10) 6,050 kg 14,000 36,000 360 s

What does not scale is the coupling. Every van carries its kingpin the same distance behind the nose and its landing gear the same distance behind the kingpin. The tractor, the secure and release cycles and every control work on all three without a line of the runtime changing: it couples by vehicle class and by the kingpin marker, never by name.

One body, three lengths

The 53’s body script now reads its stations from a contract, so one script builds every length: axles, kingpin, ribs, roof bows, slider and livery layout all come from the numbers. Rebuilt from its own unchanged contract, the 53 came out identical, object for object and triangle for triangle; that was the first check, before a single new van existed. The 28 and the 40 each get their own baked textures, their own door plate (WC-28-001, WC-40-001), three levels of detail and the damage states. The 53 and the tractor ship exactly as they did in 1.3.0.

What the first proofs got wrong

The first 28-foot renders read “THE WARLOCK OMMANDERY”. The side posts stand a centimeter and a half proud of the panel, and the lettering, laid out to the shorter side, is half the size of the 53’s, so a post hides nearly half a letter instead of a fifth. On the 28 and the 40 the seal and lettering now sit just in front of the post faces. The 53’s lettering shows the same thing in game at some angles; it is left as approved for now and comes up again with the livery work.

Two older problems turned up on the way. The pack’s changelog had repeated two earlier releases seven and eight times over, a merge bug in the release tool; it is fixed, and the tool now refuses a changelog that repeats or drops a version. And the preview renders had never placed the landing gear, so it sat under the middle of every trailer in the proofs; the family renders place it where the game does.

Checked

Both new vans passed the build gates, and their finished game files were read back: every body material on its own texture set, the right door plate on each. The release tool refused three bad files planted on purpose, then passed the real ones. Clean boot. Then the drive: Taroos coupled and released all three vans with the keyboard, the gamepad and the seated menu. “All of it works.”
