TWC Roadmaster 1.3.0: into the cab

The game has no first person in vehicles, and the truck had no inside. 1.3.0 adds a cab camera, cuts real windows through a shell that had been solid, and builds the interior: dash, working gauges, the wheel, seats, the sleeper. What was measured before anything was modeled, and what went wrong on the way.

The seat first

7 Days to Die has no first person in a vehicle: what reads as first person on a small car is the chase camera scrolled to its minimum, orbiting a point above the vehicle’s origin. On a tractor whose cab sits two meters ahead of that origin, the same scroll landed inside the sleeper wall. 1.3.0 gives the tractor a cab camera: at the minimum scroll the camera goes to the seated player’s head, the body is hidden the way the game hides it in its own first person, and hopping out puts everything back. Three cuts to get there, each one found by Reggie in the seat: a zero camera offset froze the view, the first eye point looked out from inside the player’s own skull, and the game stops asking the vehicle for a camera once you detach.

Measured before modeled

The camera logs the eye point in vehicle space. That number, not a guess, sets the dash height. It also revealed the cab is short: eye to firewall is 0.56 m and the steering joint is 0.17 m behind the firewall, so the dash is a shallow shelf over the wheel with the gauge pod under it rather than the deep desk of the reference photographs. The gates that decide the interior cast rays from that eye point: through every window, to every gauge, back to the TV.

Windows that are windows

Every pane on the truck had been a slab standing in front of a solid shell. From the seat, the windshield was black paint. The shell is now hollowed and the six openings cut through both walls. The first attempt cut a solid block and produced 22 cm pockets instead of holes; the gate caught it. The hood was found running 15 cm into the cab, in front of the gauges; it is trimmed at the firewall and a gate now refuses any exterior part inside the hollow.

The interior

One authored atlas: black leather with bronze stitching, walnut plank, gold gauge faces, the Commandery seal. 138 parts, about seven thousand triangles, at the nearest level of detail only. The wheel is built with its origin on the game’s steering joint and parented under it, so it turns with the steering; the seal sits on its hub. The eight needles read speed, revs, fuel, air, oil, water, volts and boost from the truck’s own state. With the headlights on the faces glow and a dome light lights the cab. Behind the seats the sleeper is open: bunk, cabinets, a TV on the back wall, reading lamps, a wardrobe, tied-back curtains.

Reggie’s look found trim flickering; a scan for coplanar faces found seventeen pairs, now zero. The door cards stood above the window sill; they sit under it.

Checked

Every gate green, both bundles verified, clean boot, approved in game. Seventeen files in one folder, identical to the zip, referencing nothing outside it; the runtime depends only on assemblies the game ships.
