TWC Procedural Interstate Network 1.0.0: a divided interstate in every random world, on V3.3 and V2.6

The interstate is out. One mod folder adds an Interstate setting to the world generator and builds a divided highway network into every world it generates: two rings, one ring, a cross, a grid, Wild, Surveyor or the Skyway. Over 500 custom highway tiles built from vanilla blocks, server-side only, for V3.3 and V2.6.

The name

Until this release the project was the Interstate Framework. It ships as TWC Procedural Interstate Network: procedural because the network is built new into every world the generator makes, and a network because it is not one road but a web of lines, interchanges and exits. It joins the TWC family beside the TWC Roadmaster and the TWC M6 Gran Coupe, and like them it stands alone.

Where to get it

On the Downloads page here, on Nexus Mods and on 7daystodiemods: the same two files on all three, the V3.3 build and the V2.6 build, byte for byte. The showcase video, 90 seconds in game on worlds from the release test, is on YouTube.

What you get

Install one folder, start the game with EAC off, and the world generator has three new settings under World Size:

  • Interstate: the shape. Two rings large or small, One ring large, medium or small, Cross, Grid, Wild, Surveyor, Skyway, or Off.
  • Interstate terrain: Around, Through or Scenic.
  • Interstate build: Mixed or Deck only.

Each world gets a 28-block divided interstate on decks, ground and tunnels, with diamond interchanges, toll booths at the town gateways, city bypasses, and ways on and off along the line, closer together in the forest where players start. Every Commandery Gateway brings the Commandery Plaza and its trader, across from a roadside hotel. No vanilla trader is placed at the interstate’s gateways, so the nearby towns keep their chance at a trader of their own.

The Skyway

Most shapes are about getting around. The Skyway is about the ride: a network that stays up in the air, routed over the deepest valleys, lakes and rivers it can find, always on decks and always scenic. It has fewer ways on and off than the other shapes, on purpose.

How it was tested

Thirty worlds were generated for the release on V3.3: every shape on Mixed, on Deck only and on Scenic, all at 10240 with towns set to Many and the terrain settings changed in every world. Each world was loaded and checked piece by piece, and in all thirty every piece the planner placed is in the world. Three fixes came out of that test, each proven in fresh worlds. The download was then proven against the tested build: the same seed generated with each places the same world, decoration for decoration.

On a dedicated server, two players joined and played, one of them on a machine without the mod. The V2.6 build went through every shape on V2.6, then a dedicated V2.6 server, with a second machine joining without the mod. V2.6 builds the ground under road tiles by an older rule that would have dug out the ground under the decks; the V2.6 build meets that rule.

Known limits

It is random world generation: expect the odd dead end, a step where the land beat the road, or a town road that meets a diamond off its line. On hilly maps, Two rings small can step up sharply beside its center hub where the inner ring runs high; that fix is planned for 1.1. A dedicated server builds Two rings large; for another shape, generate the world in single player and put it on the server.
